The Social Work Education in Ethiopia Partnership (SWEEP) started as a project involving the Jane Addams College of Social Work at University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC), Addis Ababa University (AAU), The Council of International Programs USA, and a network of nonprofit agencies in the USA and Ethiopia. Our partnership has collaborated with Addis Ababa University in starting Ethiopia's first-ever master's degree in social work in 2004, and a doctoral program in Social Work & Social Development in 2006. Our collaboration also includes the Community Work & Life Center and the Ethiopian Workforce Entrepreneurship and Training Program. In 2006, the UIC-AAU partnership won the Partners in Advancing Education for International Social Work Award from the Commission on Global Social Work Education.

From its base in social work education, SWEEP has evolved into an informal network representing faculty and students from other universities, professionals from various disciplines, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). This web site provides a history of SWEEP and its accomplishments, and resources for those interested in the advancement of education, research, training and service delivery in Ethiopia and Africa. It also provides information on several new projects: the Community Development and Child Welfare Training program (CD-CW) which trains local child and family community workers to address the needs of orphans and vulnerable children, and an AAU-UIC university-community partnership focusing Asset Based Community Development in the Gedam Sefer community of Addis Ababa
