Training
SESSION 1: SMALL GROUP AND COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT SKILLS
This component covers the basic skills necessary to work effectively with small groups, and carry
out strengths-based community assessments. Effective work requires that child and family community
workers have the requisite skills to work with small groups in the Ethiopian context of self-help groups,
traditional associations, local community leaders, and task groups. It also requires that workers have
skills in community assessment based on individual, family, and community strengths and assets. Such
knowledge will enhance workers ability to build interventions with the community, by “using what the
community has to get what they want.” Small group and community assessment skills are integrated into
the philosophy and models presented throughout the curriculum. Participants carry out a Community
Assessment to apply this knowledge and develop practice skills. Training Session 1 introduces the
methods and practice of an Integrated Community Development and Child Welfare Model of Practice. The
training emphasizes the knowledge and practical skills of small group and community practice to improve
the lives of at-risk children and families. The principles associated with Asset Based Community Development
(ABCD) are presented as a means of building the capacity of communities from strengths-based and assets-based
perspectives. Participants are guided through a variety of practical exercises that will give them hands-on
experience in leading small groups, and working with local associations and community members. Trainees will
be introduced to community development and child welfare in the Ethiopian context through site visits to
organizations exhibiting best practices in these two areas.
